Our goals in prose, pictures and web sites.
Sustainable, organic agriculture and gardening-
One of the primary physical goals is making the farm sustainable and ecologically friendly. We have been working on this for many years. However, we are becoming more and more aware of our obligation to do more.
We have a switch grass filter strip along the river. All of the fields that require terracing and grassed waterways have them in place. They are in conformity with the USDA conservation requirements. The over farmed and steep land is in “set aside”.
In September of 2010 we will have approximately 22 acres of set aside available for the grazing of cattle, sheep and we will put chickens on the pasture also. The five grass native mix will have been in “set aside” for 10 years next September, thus qualifying as organic. We hope to add more pasture in the future.
There have been two dozer built, earth ponds in farm for some time. During the past few years the beavers have enlarged the size of the two ponds with beaver dams and have added two more. The water that runs into the river from the stream is very clean. The water foul and the animals appreciate the ponds.
One of the byproducts of our wood fired boiler will be biological charcoal.
